Was It Worth It?

This bronze sculpture was made for the retirement of a neurosurgical friend and Department Chairman in Japan. It depicts the hand of God holding the remaining skull of someone long-gone and asking if he made the life he was given worthwhile. Some people look at retirement as “the end”. I look at it as a new beginning. You have travelled for many years on one road in life. Now it is time to pull the car over, take off the old tires and “re-tire” it to travel in a different direction. This was made as a reminder to him (and to me and to all of us) that even at retirement, there remains time to do things that are worthwhile so that ultimately you may answer the question “Was it worth it?” with a resounding YES!
